A family was devastated when they returned home to find their trailer on fire Tuesday afternoon at Northview Estates.
"I was hit in the face with heat and thick black smoke when I opened the door," James Michael said, about the fire officials believe started in the kitchen area of the trailer located at Lot No. 15. "I shut it, grabbed the dog and told my wife to move our car across the road, away from the trailer."
Shortly after 2:30 p.m. Michael's neighbor called 911, and members of Clay County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to secure the scene while Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department quickly put out the fire. The Brazil City Fire Dept. was dispatched for assistance, while Dick Johnson Township Volunteer provided tanker assistance.
As firefighters gained entry through the trailer's back door to check for hot spots, Michael held his trembling wife close.
Posey firefighter Cody Barnard told The Brazil Times that no official determination of damages would be available as of press time due to a pending investigation into the cause of the fire.
But anything is a great loss for the Michael's family, who do not have homeowner's insurance on the trailer.
"Everything we own is inside that trailer," he said, adding how grateful he was to the firefighters who came to help. "But just when things are starting to look up for us, it seems like something always goes wrong."
