CLAY CITY -- Northview claimed the temporary county bragging rights with a pair of team cross country wins over rival Clay City on Wednesday evening.

The Knights took the top-four spots in the boys' race, led by Landry Moore's victory in 17:54, to win with a score of just 17 points to the Eels' 41 and West Vigo's 82.

The Vikings were set back in their efforts when their top runner was forced from the race after an ankle injury during the five-kilometer race.

"I feel that we ran extremelly well on another tough course," commented Northview coach Chad Smith. "To go 1-4 on a team like Clay City, who has always been a fierce rival in the past is a great accomplishment."

The Northview girls also scored a team victory by taking the top-two spots and eight of the top nine overall in winning 18 to 45 over West Vigo. Clay City did not have a complete team on Tuesday.

"I think our girls went out a little harder than usual and I think that hurt them in the end," admitted Clay City coach Keith Jones of his girl's team.

Andrea Ladd led the Eels with a 10th place finish overall, but the Knights were overwhelming in the meet.

Kylee Thacker won the race with a time of 20:47 on a course that is renowned for being tough on runners with rolling hills and very few flat areas.

Senior Jennnifer Jeffers put together perhaps the best race of her career and took second for the Knights with her time of 22:36.

"Jennifer looked relaxed tonight," assessed Northview girl's coach Ryand Tucker who is no stranger to the course after being part of the Eels' program for years. "This course is no cakewalk and I know what it can do to you. Kylee won and that is what we expected her to do, but I think Jennifer had her best effort of the season."

In fact, Jeffers' time was a personal best in her 5K Northview career.

The rest of the Northview girls were no slouches either as Corey Laue placed fourth behind West Vigo's Melissa Porter and the Knights' Casandra Barnett was fifth ahead of Allie True, Marissa Bryant and Krystle Miller to round out the top-seven.

The Eels got a 14th from Brittany Richard with Stephanie Granger in 16th and Samantha Stoops in 17th overall.

"Our girls are getting better," said Jones of his Eels. "They got a late start this year so they are still trying to play catch up."

The Northview boys didn't need to do much catching up in their race as Chris Smith finished just behind Moore to take the runnerup spot in the event in 17:59. Ryan Lutes wasn't far behind in 18:54 and Connor Strain took fourth overall in 19:36 to edge out the Eels' top finisher, Kevin Cook's 17:43.

The Eels pushed Parker Modesitt (19:27) in ahead of the Knights' Eli Kirby (19:36) and Kolby Henke crossed in eight place for the Knights. The Eels' Jesse Vansickle and Conner Modesitt rounded out the top-10 in the race.

Afterwards, Jones felt that his team had a bit of an off day compared to previous races versus the Knights.

"I thought maybe Braxton (Griffith) struggled a little bit today. He has some trouble breathing sometimes when the day's are a little warmer. But I think, without looking at the times, that we ran (Northview) better on Saturday (at the South Knox Invite) than we did today."

With the season winding down toward the postseason, the Knights will get a good barometer of their progression when they travel to Culver Academy for an invitational against many of the state's best teams on Saturday.

"We look forward to going to Culver this weekend to run at the premier cross country meet in the Midwest," said Smith. "Hopefully we can get a couple of runners under 17 minutes and set more personal bests going into the WIC Championships next week."
