Duane E. Kowitz, 71, Brazil, passed away Sept. 20, 2007, at 11:13 a.m. at St. Vincent Clay Hospital, following a long illness.

He was born Oct. 31, 1935, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Elmore C. Kowitz and Erna E. Behling Kowitz.

On Nov. 8, 1958, he married Bonnie J. Modesitt. She preceded him in death on May 19, 2001.

Duane proudly served his country in both the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard.

In 1961, Duane and Bonnie moved to Brazil from Milwaukee. Duane retired from Bemis on Jan. 24, 2002, after 40 years of employment.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church, a life-time member of American Legion Post #2, and also served as Past Commander; and Moose #780.

Fishing was a favorite pastime and Duane was also an avid bowler for many years in the Brazil Leagues.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bonnie; two sisters, Arleen Behling and Jeannette Schallhorn; and a grandson, Lucas Holifield.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-laws, Kimberly and Sam Colclasure of Brazil, Kathy and Mike Stevens; two sons, Kevin and Angie Kowitz, and Keith and Cindy Kowitz ; a half sister, Debbie Hakes of Milwaukee, Wis; a half-brother, Chris Kowitz of Milwaukee, Wis; 11 grandchildren, Joshua Kowitz, Ashley Kowitz, Brittany Kowitz, Samuel Colclasure, Jr., Tiffany Colclasure, Shannon Colclasure, Jeremy Farris, Anthony Stevens, Mary Kay Wymer, Lisa Holifield, and Josh Holifield; one great-grandson Avery Kowitz; one sister-in-law, Maryilyn Modesitt; many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at French Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Pippin officiating. Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be provided by the American Legion Post #2 and VFW #1127. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-8 p.m. Post a heart of condolence at www.frenchfuneralhome.com.
