Northview's Kylee Thacker raced to a 13th-place finish against some of the state's top runners.
CULVER -- With the state's top competition on hand for the 26th Annual Culver Academies Invitational on Saturday, the Knights placed 21st as teams.

The Northview girls were led by junior Kylee Thacker who got a look at many of the same athletes she might see at the state finals in a month.

Thacker rolled to her best time of the season on a fast course at Culver. She finished in 19:04 to lead the team in a race won, not surprisingly by two-time state champion Alex Banfich in 18:05.

Westfield was the team winner in the girls' event, placing three of their runners in the top-15 to score 69 points. Lake Central was the runnerup with 75 points and Northview had 548 points.

The Northview boys were also 21st as a whole, led by a 78th place from Landry Moore in 17:09.

"Nearly everybody on the team had a personal best," commented coach Chad Smith. "Conor espcially stood out in this meet. This is the first time that Conor had broke the 18-minute barrier."

Strain, a sophomore for the Knights, was fourth on the team in 17:40 and in 120th overall. Ryan Lutes was the second place runner for the Knights in 17:17 and Chris Smith was 108th overall in 17:33. Eli Kirby finished in 18:16 in 144th, Kolby Henke was 161st in 19:00 and Jordan Maurer wasa 164th in 19:30.

"Landry and Ryan were right on the edge of breaking 17 minutes," assessed Smith. "I feel that by next Friday they will see their time drop. This was a very good meet for us, running against such tough competition makes us better in the long run."

Illinois' Neuquea Valley was the team winner with 71 points and had the individual winner with Christopher Derrick. His time of 14:47 beat out Laporte's Mike Fouts who was 18 seconds back.

The Northview girls got a 129th place finish from Corey Laue in 21:26 and Allie True placed 132nd in 21:31. Casandra Barnett was 139th in a time of 21:40 as Northview did a good job of sticking together in a pack. With Jennifer Jeffers in 144th in 21:44, the Knights had four runners place within 18 seconds which bodes well for Friday's Western Indiana Conference meet.

Rounding out the Knights' scoring was Marisa Bryan in 177th place with a time of 23:21 and Krystle Miller's 24:34 in 187th.
