Area soccer teams have reached the stretch run of the 2007 season and with the sectional draw being made early Monday morning, the paths are set for each squad's bid for a sectional championship.
The Northview Knights are set to play West Vigo in the Terre Haute North boys' sectional while the girls will play North Knox at Terre Haute South.
For the boys, Terre Haute North will face South Vermillion and the South Braves will take on the winner of Northview vs. West Vigo.
Coach Don Bryan feels that coming into the sectional, that South has the edge as the preliminary favorite.
"Both North and South play a tough MIC schedule, but South gets to sit out the first round,he said."
"North and South basically go back and forth. North should be ok with South Vermillion. I'd say (the draw) was the best thing we could have hoped for. We held our own against Guerin Catholic and they are the caliber of Terre Haute North and South."
The Knights had their struggles early in the season but have come around the second half of the year and are currently 5-9 with a road trip to Sullivan today to finish their regular season.
"I think everyone feels comfortable with their role on the team and the different lineups," said Bryan. "At least three games we let slip away and I think our kids know that. Our intensity was great on Saturday (against Guerin, a 2-1 loss)."
The girls' sectional begins with an opening night contest with Greencastle and Terre Haute South followed by Terre Haute North versus Sullivan.
The Knights take on the Warriors in game one of the second day with West Vigo and South Vermillion squaring off in the second game.
"I like the way the bracket's set up," said Northview girls' coach Tony Alstott. "We don't know much about North Knox, but they've only lost one game. But with North, South, Greencastle and Sullivan all playing each other that helps."
The Knights own a win over Greencastle this season and played Sullivan tough in an earlier WIC loss. Northview also lost to Terre Haute North, but that was early in the year before the Knights had settled in as a team.
Northview has had one of its best season's as program and has had no problems of late scoring goals.
"We're one win away from a winning regular season and one win away from a share of the conference championship which are two accomplishments the program has never done," said Alstott of his team.
The Knights will get a look at Terre Haute South in a home match tonight at 5 p.m. before taking on sectional foe North Knox on Oct. 1 before capping the regular season versus Southmont the following night.
