BROWN?COUNTY -- With Western Indiana Conference titles on the line, the Northview Cross Country teams did not disappoint.

At the conference meet Friday night at Eagle Park, the boys took home the championship scoring 34 points, beating out runner-up Edgewood, who finished with 39.

The boys were led by Chris Smith, who put in a time of 17:11, good enough to place third individually. Blake Hover of Edgewood led all individuals on the boys side, finishing slightly ahead of Smith with a time of 17:05.

It was the first championship for the boys cross country team since 2001, giving Coach Chad Smith a good feeling going into the sectionals.

"Our first place and fifth place finishers on the boys side finished within a minute of each other, which is what you want to see," Smith said. "This is a big win, which gives us confidence, and it puts us in a great position for the upcoming sectionals

For the boys, it was an all-around effort as three other runners placed in the top ten individually. Also, Eli Kirby finished 13th with a time of 18:07, Kolby Henke came in 20th at 18:53 and Jordan Maurer rounded out the Knights in 25th, out of 42 runners, with a time of 19:25.

The girls team also had a great outing, placing second in the meet with a total of 35 points. The girls came within and arms reach of a championship, losing to Edgewood, which finished with 24 points.

Kylee Thacker, who set a season-best time last Saturday at Culver, was strong once again as she led the Knights girls with a time of 19:47, good enough to also take home the individual championship.

Corey Laue was second for the Knights' girls, finishing 6th overall with a time of 20:53, as the girls also had four runners place in the top ten individually.

Finishing just out of the top ten were Allie True in 11th with a time of 21:24, Marissa Bryan in 17th at 22:47, and Krystle Miller, at a time of 23:54, finished the Knights day in 24th out of a total of 44 runners.

"Overall, we ran exceptionally great today," Smith said. "It was one of the best performances we have put up as a team, and now we move on to sectionals at a track we know very well."

The sectionals for the cross country teams will be held Oct. 9, at LaVern Gibson Championship cross Country Course in Terre Haute.
