Northview, Clay City move to regionals

Monday, October 1, 2007

INDIANAPOLIS?-- Both Clay County high school marching bands advanced to regional competition this weekend.

The Clay City Imperial Regiment and Northview Marching Knights both received gold ratings in Indiana State School Marching Association District competitions.

The Imperial Regiment competed at Southport High School in Indianapolis Saturday and received a gold rating to move to regional competition.

"The band had their best performance so far this season," Clay City band director Mark Ziegler said. "The students were very excited about their performance."

Clay City competes in Class D. The Imperial Regiment also marched in the Cory Apple Festival Parade Sunday and will compete at Center Grove and Carmel this weekend before taking part in regional competition on Oct. 13. The site has yet to be determined.

The Marching Knights also competed at Southport Saturday and received a gold rating. However, band director Bob Medworth said the Knights could have performed better.

"The band did not perform well," Medworth said. "We had significant timing issues throughout the show, front ensemble was not matched up with the battery, trumpets had a number of later entrances and we just were not sharp musically.

"Usually, this also means that the performers' feet were not in time with the drum major's hands which then negatively affects the marching performance and visual score. This was the case Saturday."

The Marching Knights also traveled to the RCA Dome Saturday to perform at halftime of the Knights' football game against South Vermillion.

"The band performed significantly better, although from watching the video, many of the younger members made small mental errors. They were probably a little overwhelmed with the whole dome experience."

The Marching Knights compete in Class B.

They will perform Friday at halftime of the Knights' football game against West Vigo, which is also senior night.

On Saturday, the Marching Knights will compete in a contest at Ben Davis High School before competing in regional competition on Oct. 13 at Indiana State University.

"The band is looking forward to performing on the Astroturf at the Ben Davis field," Medworth said.

The Marching Knights performance at the RCA Dome -- as well as other information regarding the band -- can be viewed at www.northviewband.org.

The state finals are scheduled for Oct. 20 at the RCA Dome.

One thing that the band members should keep in mind throughout the rest of the season is that improvement AND practice, practice, practice makes perfect. Great job, nevertheless, Knights.
