County athletes continue success in college

With beautiful weather prevalent in the Midwest over the weekend, the county's collegiate athletes enjoyed beautiful weather for their events.

On Friday evening, Northview's Emily Pugh competed with her Indiana State teammates at the 52nd Notre Dame Invitational. The Sycamore women finished 14th in the 23-team field. Pugh placed 105th overall in a time of 19:31 while Terre Haute North grad Kayla Alexander was the top finisher for ISU in 27th overall in 18:31.

Pugh's former teammate with the Knights, James Grounds, a Vincennes sophomore, competed at the Earlham Invitational with the Blazers over the weekend.

Vincennes was third overall behind Otterbein College who scored just 26 points and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology who was second with 58 points. Vincennes was third with 133 points as Grounds took 12th overall in a time of 27:23.


The University of Indianapolis volleyball team continued to roll on by improving to 17-1 overall this season (8-0 GLVC) by defeating No. 12 ranked Southern Illinois Edwardsville, 28-30, 30-26, 30-21.

The Northview grad had a kill while playing in two games that resulted in a 30-18, 30-23, 30-14 win by the Greyhounds that improved them to 14-1 overall.

Northview graduate Christy Fulk did not play in that match, however, she played in two-of-three games against Southern Indiana last week, a three-game victory.

Clay City graduate Ashley McCullough is a freshman member of the Indiana State Sycamores played in one game against Creighton over the weekend. ISU lost in three games to 11-5 Creighton which is unbeaten in the MVC.

Brianne Arvin is a freshman at Stephens College in Columbia, MO. and is also a member of the volleyball team.

No statistics were available for the 2007 season.


Jaime Bays, who has switched over to a full time defensive player as well as returning kickoffs, had three solo tackles on Saturday as his Marian Knights lost to 25th-ranked Malone.

Bays also returned five kickoffs for 110 total yards with his longest, a 60 yard return.

Matt Crooks is a kicker for the Knights but has not seen action to this point while Devon Chamberlain is listed as a wide receiver for Marian and Dayne Upperman is an offensive lineman.

Joe Evinger is a member of the College of the Canyons football program and has registered a solo tackle for the California Junior College power. The team set several school records during a 67-10 win over West Los Angeles in which they scored 10 touchdowns.

The 6'6, 300 pound lineman is a 2007 Northview graduate.


2007 Northview graduate, Taylor Montague, is a freshman at Franklin College and a member of the Grizzlies soccer program.

Montague has played 18 minutes this season without allowing a goal for the Grizzlies who are 2-4-1 overall, 1-1 in the conference.


Clay City graduate Chelsee Gerber has been a key contributor for the Saint Mary-of-the-

Woods softball team that has gone 13-6 in their fall season. Gerber has hit leadoff for the Pomeroys who recently lost a narrow 2-0 decision to Indiana State.

Stephanie Jonson and Brittaney Searing each has seen time during Indiana State's fall softball season. On Sunday, Jonson was hitless in one at-bat against Butler while Searing had eight putouts behind the plate on defense but did not have a hit in two at-bats.
