Both the Clay City Imperial Regiment and Northview Marching Knights competed in contests Saturday heading into Regional competition this weekend.
The Imperial Regiment took part in two contests, one at Center Grove and the other in Carmel.
At Center Grove Saturday morning, the Imperial Regiment picked up a first-place finish and won Best Music, Best Visual and Best General Effect.
At Carmel later in the day, the Imperial Regiment finished third overall and won Best Visual Performance and Best Color Guard.
Northview took part in the Ben Davis Invitational and posted its best score of the season.
The Marching Knights finished with a tally of 79.3, but finished second to Plainfield, which scored 79.75.
NHS band director Bob Medworth said Floyd Central was third at 74.9 while Decatur Central was fourth with 74 points. Mooresville finished fifth at 71 points and Westfield was sixth with 69 points.
Medworth said the Knights split the music and visual captions "pretty evenly" with Plainfield.
"We were, overall, very much improved over last week and some changes made in parts of the show were well received and add to the overall effect of the show," Medworth said. "We made a digital recording of the performance and when you listen to it, with sound isolation headphones, you hear a number of very small individual music errors that just add a little overall ugliness to some key moments in the show.
"Some of this caused by the fact that as we improve the overall band sound, individual errors can be heard more easily and do more damage than they did earlier in the year."
Medworth added the heat may have caused havoc Saturday.
"It was also 90 degrees Saturday when we performed at 2:15 p.m. and by the end of an eight-minute non-stop show, in full uniform and hat, there had to be some kids looking for an oasis," Medworth said.

Both the Imperial Regiment and the Marching Knights will compete in Regional competition at Indiana State University on Saturday.
The top five bands from each class at ISU will advance to the RCA Dome for State Finals on Oct. 20.
