Some Clay County residents experienced a brief power outage when someone vandalized a power sub-station early Saturday morning.
While the Clay County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident, Hoosier Energy is offering a $2,500 reward with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects.
According to a report by Clay County Sheriff's Deputy Brison Swearingen, an undisclosed number of Hoosier Energy customers in the Center Point and rural Brazil area lost power when someone broke into a Hoosier Energy Power Substation located in Jackson Township. The energized substation, which was quickly repaired, suffered damages between $10,000-$15,000.
Swearingen said whomever vandalized the substation was very lucky because the equipment, when operational, had voltage readings ranging between 7,200-69,000 volts.
The power plant foreman reported to Swearingen that the vandals could have been hurt during the incident, with flash burn or electrocution possible injuries as a result.
