County athletes continue fall sports

As Fall begins to strengthen its grip on the Wabash Valley, area graduates are getting into crunch time at various colleges.

Northview's Emily Pugh prepares with her teammates for the Indiana State Pre-Nationals sponsored by Brooks and the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau. The race is one of the highly-touted as 13 nationally-ranked men's teams and 12 nationally-ranked women's teams will take to the course. Top-ranked Stanford will test their mettle against No. 4 Minnesota, and No. 7 Rice as well as No. 7 Rice and No. 11 Florida State.

The men's 8K Blue race begins at 11 a.m. at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course with the women's 6K Blue race at 12:20 p.m.

Pugh's former teammate with the Knights, James Grounds, a Vincennes sophomore, will compete with the Trailblazer's at the University of Evansville on Saturday.

Volleyball

The University of Indianapolis volleyball team continues to soar by drilling IU-Southeast by a 30-18, 30-17, 30-16 to improve to 21-1 and 11-0 in the GLVC. North-view graduate Christy Fulk is a member of the No. 18 Greyhounds and had two kills while playing in two games in the match.

In a three-game sweep over Missouri-Rolla on Saturday, Fulk added a kill in two attempts while playing in two games.

The wins over the weekend pushed UIndy's win streak to 18 in a row this season and gave the Greyounds their ninth straight 20-win season.

Clay City graduate Ashley McCullough is a freshman member of the Indiana State Sycamores and played in one game against Bradley over the weekend. The Sycamores dropped a four-game match, 30-24, 16-30, 26-30, 25-30. The ISU squad is now 3-13 overall.

Brianne Arvin is a freshman at Stephens College in Columbia, MO. and is also a member of the volleyball team.

No statistics were available for the 2007 season.

Football

The Marian Knights, in their first season of competition, faced NAIA power St. Franicis on Saturday, coming away with a 57-7 defeat.

Former Northview standout, Jaime Bays returned seven kickoffs for 136 total yards with the longest being 27 yards.

From his linebacker spot, Bays had three solo tackles and assisted on two others.

Matt Crooks is a kicker for the Knights but has not seen action to this point while Devon Chamberlain is listed as a wide receiver for Marian and Dayne Upperman is an offensive lineman who has been redshirted.

Joe Evinger is a member of the College of the Canyons football program and has registered a solo tackle for the California Junior College power. The team had a bye last weekend but will face Glendale on the road on Saturday.

The 6'6, 300 pound lineman is a 2007 Northview graduate.

Soccer

2007 Northview graduate, Taylor Montague, is a freshman at Franklin College and a member of the Grizzlies soccer program.

Montague has played 85 minutes this in two matches with a 2.12 goals against average for the Grizzlies who are 3-7-1 overall, 2-2 in the conference.

Golf

Air Force Academy senior golfer, Jared Freeman, a Northview graduate, has competed in one tourney this season, tying for 83rd out of a field of 100 golfers at the Falcon Invite. Freeman shot rounds of 78, 85 and 70 for a 17-over par, 233.

Clay City grad and Vincennes freshman, Fred Modesitt, is a member of the Trailblazers golf team. No results were available.
