Northview moves on to state finals

Monday, October 15, 2007

TERRE HAUTE -- On Saturday, the Northview Marching Knights advanced to the Indiana State School Marching Association State Finals after placing among the top five Class B bands at the Terre Haute Regional.

Northview advanced for the 23rd time in its 24-year history.

"(Northview Marching Knights) gave their best performance of the year at the regional and received a standing ovation from almost everyone in the stadium, which is quite an accomplishment considering there are a lot of fans up there who hope to finish ahead of you," Northview band director Bob Medworth said. "It was one of the special moments of my career.

"You could feel the electricity coming from the kids during the performance and it was simply a joy to sit there on the sidelines and watch them. The kids and staff were simply ecstatic at the conclusion of the show and one student came running up to me and told me it was the most fun he has ever had in his life."

Other bands moving to the state finals from the south regional included Greenwood, Plainfield, Decatur Central and Jasper.

Class B bands from the north regional moving to state were Goshen, Dekalb, Northridge, Concord and New Castle.

Medworth said the week leading to regional was "fantastic."

"We need to do that again," he said. "There are still many things to perfect in our show and the only thing left that can raise our score is better execution," he said. "We have a show capable of blowing the roof off the dome, if we perform it."

The state finals for Class B begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and will take place at the RCA Dome.

Tickets will be on sale at Northview in the music office from 8 a.m.-noon beginning Tuesday and concluding Friday. Tickets for the state finals will also be available during evening rehearsals.

Medworth learned Sunday that Northview will be the final band marching in Class B competition Saturday.

The Clay City Imperial Regiment also competed at the regional Saturday. The band received a gold rating, but did not advance to state competition.
