Northview girls advance to semistate

Monday, October 15, 2007

Clay City senior Kevin Cook competed for the Eel boys cross country team for the last time in his career at the Brown County Regional Saturday. He placed 28th overall.
NASHVILLE -- Led by junior Kylee Thacker, the Northview High School girls cross country team finished fifth at the Brown County Regional Saturday, qualifying for competition at the Bedford North Lawrence Semistate on Saturday.

Thacker, who ran sixth at the regional in 2006, said she was not feeling well, but still managed to place 11th.

She crossed the finish line with a time of 19:35.

"To be honest, I really didn't feel like running today," said Thacker. "Because of the way I felt, I was not able to warm up like I normally do. As a result, I did not start the race as quickly as I would have wanted to.?I am really sore. I had nothing left at the end. I was hoping I wouldn't get passed because I was completely out of it at the finish line."

The Lady Knights, who came up four points short of making the semistate a year ago, had no such trouble qualifying for the semistate this year.

With Cassandra Barnett (22nd), Allison True (35th), Corey Laue (38th), Jennifer Jeffers (44th), Marissa Bryan (46th) and Krystle Miller (54th) also running for Northview, the Lady Knights finished fifth with a total of 145 points. They outdistanced sixth-place Terre Haute South by 31 points.

The top five teams advanced to the next level.

Thacker said her teammates ran a great race and it will make it even more special having the entire team compete at the semistate.

The Northview boys, who were led by Landry Moore's 18th place finish, just missed making the semistate. The Knights took sixth, one point behind Edgewood.?"Oh my gosh," said Northview coach Chad Smith, who doubled over in disbelief when finding out the final results. "It was heartbreaking for the kids to get this close to the semistate, but not make it. I thought the boys put forth a great effort," said the first-year Knights' coach. "I knew it was going to be close, but you never think of getting beat by just one point. That goes to show you that every position and every place counts in cross country. We were in a good position to qualify, but just came up short. The boys had a very good season."

Clay City finished ninth with a total of 200 points. The Eels, who qualified for the semistate last season, were led by the 28th-place finish of Kevin Cook.

"This is one of the toughest regionals in the state," said Clay City boys coach Keith Jones. "We came over here and ran better today than we did Tuesday at the sectional. I was very proud of all the accomplishments of the boys this season."

The girls' semistate race will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to be followed by the boys event. The top six teams and top 15 individuals in both races will advance to the state finals on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.
