Shortly after 12:30 a.m., 911 dispatchers received several calls about a structure fire at 9696 Weaver Street in Knightsville. One caller reported hearing an explosion.
When members of Van Buren and Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Departments arrived on the scene they discovered flames shooting through the roof of the home that was endangering other surrounding structures, including another residence. Officials requested that Brazil City Fire Department be dispatched to the scene to provide assistance.
All four members of the unidentified family living at the home were able to escape without any reported injuries. Around 2:30 a.m., the American Red Cross arrived at the scene to provide a place to stay for the family, who has not yet been interviewed by officials.
Battling the fire until shortly after 5:40 a.m., firefighters were not able to save the home or garage at the corner, which are both considered total losses.
The home and a garage on Weaver St., just south of the fire-ravaged home, also suffered extensive heat damage.
Although officials suspect electrical problems might have caused the fire, an official cause has not been established and is under investigation.
