Light says he’s improving steady

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Joshua Light is facing an uphill battle.

But he’s taking it in stride.

Light called The Brazil Times Monday to update his condition after being shot three times and left for dead in Montgomery County a few weeks ago.

On Friday, Light’s mother Debra Waymire, granted The Brazil Times an interview regarding her son’s condition.

“I’m not down in the dumps,” Light said, calling from an undisclosed location. “I’m as happy as I could be. I just put it in the past.”

Light said during the whole situation, he was never “scared for his life.”

“I’m doing fine,” he said.

Light, 23, Brazil, was visiting a girlfriend in Crawfordsville recently when a man he had only met a couple of times woke him with a gun around 4:30 a.m.

Chad Brock, Light’s girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, entered the house while the couple were sleeping.

According to a statement Light provided authorities, Brock allegedly forced Light into a car and drove away from the house to an area near Sugar Creek in Montgomery County.

Brock then allegedly shot Light in the face.

Brock allegedly shot Light twice more and left him there, where Light laid in water for more than nine hours until being rescued.

Light said he was shot in the T-11 vertebrae. However, he said doctors and therapists believe he is heading in the right direction.

“They don’t know for sure if I’m going to be paralyzed forever,” he said.

Light said he is currently going through rehabilitation, and at a faster pace than doctors believed.

“They moved me because I wanted to go to rehab,” he said. “I’m doing great. I’m way ahead of where I should be. I was only in the hospital for four days, then I was in rehab.

“I shouldn’t be where I am right now. I can do most of the stuff that they didn’t think I could do yet.”
