A Brazil man was arrested on preliminary rape charges Sunday.
Brazil City Police Chief Terry Harrison confirmed to The Brazil Times late Sunday evening that Larry J. Sharps, 36, Brazil, was booked into the Clay County Justice Center around 6 p.m.
Harrison said that Sharps allegedly took an unidentified female from the Terre Haute area by force and brought her to a Brazil residence, where she was allegedly confined and physically attacked. Further information about the attack or the nature of the weapon used was not available as of press time.
After the victim escaped from the home, she reported the incident to authorities.
Patrolmen Andy Whittington and Clint McQueen have been assigned to the investigation.
Although early in the investigation, Harrison said that there was enough evidence to arrest Sharps at this time.
The Clay County Prosecutor's Office has been contacted about the case and is reviewing information for potentially filing other charges.
Sharps is awaiting arraignment in jail on a $25,000 bond.
