Mr. Richard (Dick) Wayne Newport, 71, Waco, Ga., formerly of Brazil, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, in Georgia.
Mr. Newport was born in Brazil, Jan. 17, 1936, the son of the late Henry Thomas and Bertha Berry Newport.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of the U.S. Navy and served in the U.S. National Guard until his retirement. After 25 years of employment, he was retired from being a maintenance supervisor at Sony Music. His other activities included being a scout master for more than 10 years, an avid horseman and a genealogy and Civil War buff.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepson Dale Short, infant daughter Lisa Jo Newport and a brother, Bobby Newport, as well as an infant sister.
Survivors include his wife, Sara Jones Newport, Waco, Ga., son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Krisse Newport, Douglasville, Ga., daughter and son-in-law, Melodie and Douglas Hayes, Brazil, Kim Mills, Princeton, Ind., stepdaughter and spouse, Missy and Ryan Robertson, Ranburne, Ala., stepsons and spouses, Jeff and Sue Short, Brazil, Rick Short, San Francisco, and 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother and spouse, Harold and Wilma Newport, Phoenix, Ariz., seven sisters, Barbara Thomas, Wilma Icenogle, Betty Matherly and Janet Stearley, all of Brazil, Pat and DeWayne Campbell, Toana, Va., Carolyn Cain, Baltimore, Md., and Mary Cooksey, Ohio.
Services here will be Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at 1 p.m. at the Lawson-Miller Chapel. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow in Georgia.
