Readers favor increased security

Sunday, November 4, 2007

Nearly 400 people responded to The Brazil Times' recent website poll question.

A total of 382 people took part in the recent question, "Following the shooting at Van Buren Elementary School, does Clay Community Schools need to increase security at all county school?"

A total of 267 voters (69.9 percent) said they believed increased security had to be done, while a total of 115 voters (30.1 percent) said they did not believe the school corporation had to increase security.

A total of 13 website readers also left comments regarding the issue.

One reader responded by saying, "Today is not like it used to be. They definitely need to increase security for sure," while another reader stated, "I have put my trust in the Clay County school systems to ensure that my child is in a safe environment. If the security is not increased, I will no longer feel that my children are safe, and may be forced to move. My children are my life and their lives among all the others should be taken very seriously."

Some readers left comments against increased security. For example, one reader stated, "No, the security seems to be OK, but you should make yourself aware and prepared for any unforeseen problems that can occur such as a shooting," while another reader said, "Schools should not simply increase security until we know all the facts about this incident. It may have been a personal vendetta or a random act."

As a simple reminder for readers and those who may have forgotten to turn the clock back Sunday, the current website poll question is "Are you in favor of Daylight Savings Time?"
