Kay William Shaw, LTCOL, U.S. Army Retired, age 67, of Brazil, and formerly of Terre Haute, passed away Nov. 3, 2007, at Royal Oaks Health Care and Rehab Center in Terre Haute, Indiana, after a courageous fight with cancer.

Kay was born July 18, 1940, in Terre Haute, as the son of Stuart A. and Hazel I. Jackson Shaw.

He was baptized at Terre Haute Second Christian Church in June of 1951, along with his father and brother Jim. He was a 1958 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School where he played football, basketball and was in the band. He graduated from electronics school in Indianapolis and soon opened his own radio and TV repair shop in Terre Haute and later opened Shaw TV and Appliance Store in Brazil.

Twice a citizen, he joined the Indiana National Guard and although not a college graduate, qualified for Officer's School and earned his commission as a 2nd Lt at Fort Benjamin Harrison. During his successful 24-year military career, he held several command positions and enjoyed the camaraderie and service to his country.

He was an avid gardener and an enthusiastic band member of three bands. He always stood out due to his height and his favorite two instruments were the tuba and sousaphone.

He was an accomplished member of the Brazil Concert Band, the Jackson Township Community Band since 1960 and recently, the Terre Haute Shiners' Drum and Bugle Corps. Music was always a passion with Kay.

He was also a member of numerous clubs where he held top officer positions in many of them. The Brazil clubs included American Legion Post No. 2, Elks BPOE, and Moose Lodge.

In Terre Haute they included The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), the Elks, Moose, Eagles, Sycamore Club, Scottish Rite and the Marine Corps League Club. He also loved playing cards with his friends. His booming laughter and quick wit will be sadly missed by all who knew him well. Kay's childhood buddy, Chuck Jordan, stood by him to the end.

He is preceded by his parents and by his wife, the former Betty Fatch, Brazil whom he married Feb. 25, 1977. Surviving former wives are Sharon Lucus and Mary Ann Smith.
