TERRE HAUTE -- Boys' basketball season tipped off at Terre Haute North with the annual jamboree on Friday night.

And though not a lot of stock can be taken in what showed up on the scoreboard following the evening, if the play on the court is any indication, the balance of power is pretty even across the board.

The combination of Northview and Terre Haute South teamed to win the scoreboard battle, 57-40, over West Vigo and Terre Haute North. But with several players out with injuries or too few practices, their return would likely have made the score much more even in the long run.

Coach Mitch Lancaster's Knights, were the top-scoring team, tallying 30 points, and won both of their quarters, 12-5 over the Patriots and 18-13 against West Vigo.

Lancaster, in his sixth-season with the Knights and 17th overall, felt his team played well, but admitted that there is plenty more work to do.

"There are a lot of question marks for all four teams," noted Lancaster. "We played with a lot of defensive intensity."

That intensity is something that every coach looks for in his team and is a big positive to take away from the scrimmage.

Northview got a pair of first quarter 3-pointers, one apiece from Clint Reynolds and Nick Lancaster and their defense held North to just five points in the opening period. Reynolds also pulled down three boards in the quarter.

"Nick and Clint hit some threes for us and Tyler and Jered (Timm) played well for us too," said Lancaster.

"We got some good play, Austin sprained his ankle in practice this morning and that slowed him some tonight," said Lancaster.

Akers ran the offense well despite eight combined turnovers in the two quarters, which can be attributed to the first live action of the season. The junior point guard also hit a 3-pointer against the Vikings in the final quarter of play.

Coltharp and Reynolds led the Knights in scoring with eight points each, followed by Nick Lancaster's six and three apiece from Akers and Timm. Jonathan Bradshaw added a putback basket in the second quarter to cap the Knights' scoring.

Though the balance of scoring was a welcome sight, Lancaster was most pleased with how is team rebounded despite a general lack of real size.

"Defense and rebounding. We accomplished those goals," commented Lancaster. "We weren't real prepared for a spread offense and West Vigo has kids that can spread you out. West Vigo played pretty well."

The Vikings were the most undermanned team, missing three regulars in Cameron Fagg, Jeremy Lucas and Drew Aff, but still played well despite their absence.

West Vigo shot well in the fourth quarter, hitting four-of-five from the field against the Knights, but Tyler Coltharp answered with six points in the quarter.

Northview outscored West Vigo 18-13 in the final period.

Terre Haute South tallied 27 points in the two periods, led by nine from junior Jake Odum and six from Christian Barnett.

Terre Haute North battled to a 14-13 edge in their quarter against the Braves and were led by eight points from senior John Garvin.

West Vigo was led by eight points from sophomore Tyler Wampler.

Northview will open their regular season on Nov. 24 with a road trip to Martinsville at 6 p.m.
