Officials believe failure to yield is the preliminary cause of a Friday evening accident just north of the intersection of Kennedy Crossing Road and County Road 950 North that killed one juvenile and injured two others.
In a press release Saturday, Clay County Sheriff's Deputy Brison Swearingen confirmed there were three juveniles involved in the accident, but said their names are being withheld at this time pending the ongoing investigation and official notification of the families involved.
Indiana State Police accident reconstruction officials believe the accident occurred when a westbound vehicle on CR 950 N failed to yield the right of way to a northbound vehicle on Kennedy Crossing Road around 9:25 p.m. After the collision both vehicles came to rest in the parking lot of the Peniel United Methodist Church.
Clay County Coroner Rick Swearingen Jr. pronounced the driver of the first vehicle dead at the scene, while a passenger in the vehicle was taken by Lifeline to Indianapolis Methodist Hospital. Details about this person's medical condition are unknown at this time.
The driver of the second vehicle was taken to St. Vincent Clay Hospital because of minor injuries sustained in the collision.
Further information about the medical condition of the two juveniles has not been released at this time.
Members of the Brazil City Police Department, Dick Johnson and Posey Volunteer Fire Departments, Clay County Search and Rescue and Trans-Care also assisted at the scene.
The Brazil Times will provide updates about this story as they become available.
