Defense is most often the key to victory regardless of the level of play and in Monday's freshmen basketball contest, the Northview Knights proved just that theory.

The Knights held visiting Owen Valley to just 4-of-21 shooting from the field after halftime and used that advantage to pull away to a 42-24 win.

The victory evened Northview's record this season to 1-1 overall.

The Knights led just 14-12 at halftime, but Sean Hauser tallied six of his nine points in the third period as Northview pulled out to a 26-18 lead. In the fourth quarter the Knights were able to spread out the floor and allow Hunter Robertson to drive the basket in the fourth quarter for eight of his 14 points.

While Owen Valley was hitting just 19 percent of their second half shots, Northview hit 12-of-26 (46 percent), mainly on drives to the basket and rebound putbacks.

Jordan Van Horn was powerful in the paint, hitting six-of-10 shots from the field on his way to 13 points.

Robertson's slashes to the basket in the final period allowed the Knights to pull away down the stretch and the 5'9 freshman also pulled down nine rebounds to lead the team.

The Patriots and Knights played a tight first half with Owen Valley getting a pair of first quarter hoops from Cody Hancock and a 3-pointer from Ethan Hoadley.

Van Horn did most of the first half damage for the Knights, hitting for three baskets for the break while pulling down three rebounds in the second quarter.

Leading by just two points at the half, the Knights quickly took control in the second half on two free throws from Hauser, a drive from Robertson and a bank shot from Van Horn to take a 20-12 lead.

Justin Rodgers scored on a drive as part of a six point evening to push the lead to 22-14 and Hauser gave the Knights a double-digit lead on a drive following a turnover.

The lead would grow to 20 points in the fourth quarter as Van Horn scored off the break and Robertson scored off another drive and was fouled. He would miss the free throw, but Rodgers was there for the putback and a 40-20 lead.

In the 'B' game, Owen Valley got out to a 12-3 lead after the first of two quarters, but Northview would rally within three points down the stretch of a 21-18 loss.

Chris Rader had three rebounds in the game and Nathan Smith added four points along with Jordan King, who led the team with four rebounds.

Travis Lester lead the Patriots with 11 points.

The Knights (1-1 overall) will host West Vigo on Wednesday in a doubleheader with the girls' team at 6 p.m.
