Beau Pingleton named outstanding wrestler at Westfield Invite
Times Staff Report
WESTFIELD -- Northview's Beau Pingleton was awarded Outstanding Wrestler honors at the Westfield Invitational over the weekend after going 5-0 overall.
As a team, the Knights placed third out of eight teams overall, winning over Mount Vernon, 38-37, shutting out Indianapolis Northwest, 74-0 and downing Shelbyville, 55-24.
"We had a good meet and finally beat Mt. Vernon after several close meets the past years," commented coach Dan Mikesell. "There were some quality teams participating and our kids battled hard all day. Beau Pingleton looked good and impressed several coaches and was named the Co-MVW along with Conner Zuber of Evansville Memorial."
Evansville Memorial edged out the Knights, 37-25 and the host Shamrocks beat Northview, 55-24.
Brandon Hathaway also won all five of his matches at 140 pounds on the afternoon as did Jared Staley at 215 pounds.
"Having four kids going undefeated was a bright spot for us," said Mikesell. "Brandon Hathaway was not feeling 100 percent and really sucked it up for us going 5-0. He had a couple of tough matches that he had to battle his sickness as well as the other wrestler so I was happy to see how much it meant to him to do well and compete at that level."
Zach Stultz was another grappler who went unbeaten for the Knights.
"Zach Stultz won a couple of close ones and really looked good on his feet when it counted. He has a lot of determination on the mat," commented Mikesell.
Mikesell also pointed towards the effort by Staley as a pivotal factor in the tournament.
"Staley also wrestled really well beating the same Mt. Vernon kid he lost to last year. It was nice to see his off season work show the improvement we were looking for," noted MIkesell. "Staley was the difference in the meet against Mt. Vernon. He still has some things to work on, but he is for sure heading in the right direction. This will be a big week for him as he will face a tough conference opponent on Saturday in state ranked Chandler Coffey from Brown County. He will need to have a great week of practice to get ready for Saturday."
Kyle McCoy scored four-out-of-five match wins on Saturday.
"Kyle McCoy was on overtime loss from going undefeated as well. He continues to progress and improve," mentioned Mikesell.
Caleb Dutrow, Tom Herr-Smith, Tommy Holifield, and Brandon Mikesell all won three-of-five matches overall.
The Knights get a matchup with conference opponent, Owen Valley, on Wednesday night.
