Knights unbeaten, keep invite trophy

Sunday, December 9, 2007

Northview's wrestling team shows off its hardware following a victory in the Northview Invitational. The Knights went a perfect 5-0 on the day to win the invite.
If you are going to host a tournament or an invitational, keeping the trophy when your opponents leave is a great feeling.

On Saturday, for the first time under coach Dan Mikesell, the Knights warded off the competition in fall five rounds of wrestling at the Northview Invitational.

Posting five match wins, including the team's first over the Plainfield Quakers, the Knights earned the right to take home the team plaque.

"I'm pretty excited about that," said Mikesell about adding the trophy to the school's awards' case.

"Plainfield has a little bit of a younger team than they usually do, but we're better right now. I think we wrestled the best we did all day against Plainfield."

The Knights also won an individual award as Beau Pingleton won all five matches and won the Most Takedowns Award with 31.

Against the Quakers, the two teams were tied after the first four matches as Tommy Holifield won an 8-3 decision and the Knights got a forfeit win at 285 pounds.

Northview's Skyler Hall (right)?takes down his opponent during the first period of his win over South Vermillion.
Northview began exerting its will at 103 as Skyler Hall built a 9-0 lead before dropping Karston Shepherd via fall.

The Quakers evened the team score at 15-all with a fall at 112 and took a brief lead when junior Robbie Wittman was able to earn a pin against sophomore Luke Pingleton.

From there however, the Knights got a huge win from Brandon Mikesell, 7-1, over Dalton Doyer to shift momentum.

Northview then got six points each from Kyle McCoy, Brandon Hathaway, Beau Pingleton and Zach Stultz. Each competitor scored a fall over their Plainfield competition to give Northview a 42-21 lead.

Caleb Dutrow sweated out a 2-0 decision at 152 pounds over Elliott Hughes and the Quakers won the final match to create the final 20-point win for Northview.

"Plainfield is a good team," commented Mikesell. "They have a good feeder program and a junior high team. This is probably the fewest number of champions we've had, but it says a lot about our program that we won the team award."

The Knights had six different competitors that either went 4-1 or 5-0 on the afternoon with Hathaway, Beau Pingleton and Stultz going unbeaten. Luke Pingleton, McCoy and Dutrow all went 4-1 on the day.

Coming into Saturday, Mikesell had pointed to the match with the South Vermillion Wildcats as a testing point for his Knights.

Northview proved up to the task, scoring a 43-28 decision thanks to some wins in key spots.

Kyle McCoy drops his Terre Haute North opponent during Saturday's Northview Invite. McCoy went 4-1 for the Knights.
"I thought Brady Silvers really stepped in and got a big win for us," said Mikesell of his sophomore 171-pounder. "Against South Vermillion his match was probably the turning point."

Silvers won his match by fall against Ashdon Frazier to give Northview six important bonus points in the team race.

Senior 215-pounder, Jared Staley also earned a bonus point with his major decision win over Dylan Lynch and Tom Herr-Smith took a 7-4 decision.

At 103 pounds, Hall came though with a second period pin against Spencer Bishop and McCoy scored bonus points for a major decision win at 130 pounds. Hathaway scored a fall along with Beau Pingleton and Stultz added a tech fall to go with three pins on the day. Luke Pingleton added a win that helped push the Knights to the 15-point team win over the Wildcats.

"South Vermillion came in undefeated and I think there were two matches in there that we should have won where we led and gave up pins," said Mikesell. "But I was pretty happy to beat them."

The Knights also scored a 48-24 win over Brown County and took a 44-28 win over Terre Haute North.

The Northview win came in front of a great crowd, including a large group of younger fans that watched the Knights take the team win.

"We had a lot of kids from our wrestling club here and our (high school) kids do a good of talking to them and I think that says a lot about their character," said Mikesell.

The Knights will host Edgewood for Senior Night on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m.

"We've got Edgewood on Tuesday and some of our guys will have a tough match," said Mikesell about the matchup with the Mustangs. "We've got the Bo Henry meet after that and we've got a goal of winning it. I think we can put a few of our guys in the finals and score some good team points."
