Born Aug. 29, 1915, she was the daughter of Edgar and Effie (Hoffman) Whittington.
Jo grew up on the family farm that her great-grandfather had purchased in 1853. She was a 1932 graduate of Staunton High School.
Josephine married Ike Winstead on Feb. 15, 1948. Jo and Ike owned and operated Winstead's Fine Foods in downtown Brazil for many years until their retirement in 1975. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Shaffer and Company in Brazil from the late 1950's through the 1960's.
During her working years she was an active member of BPW, and she was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Kiwana. Jo was a member of First Baptist Church in her later years where she sang in the choir. An avid golfer, she was a member of the ladies' golf league in Brazil for many years. In 1957 she won a golf championship which she was very proud of the rest of her life.
Survivors include a son, James W. Gray and daughter-in-law Ann of Bettendorf, Iowa; and a daughter, Kathleen Winstead Reynolds of Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren Amanda Reynolds Kasilus and husband David of Kennesaw, Ga., Elizabeth Gray Drahos and husband Damon of Schaumburg, Ill., Sara Gray of Santa Monica, Calif., Eleanor Gray of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Ashley Reynolds of Atlanta; and great-grandchildren Miranda and Sarah Kasilus of Kennesaw, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers, John Whittington and Virgil Whittington.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moore Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery south of Brazil.
Visitation is 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the funeral home.
