Semi hits car in front of Pilot station

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident early Wednesday morning at the Pilot Travel Center, 4376 N. State Road 59.

Around 8:20 a.m., members of the Clay County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, Posey and Jackson Township volunteer fire departments and Clay County Search and Rescue were dispatched to the scene of an accident involving a semi and a car in front of the gas station.

According to an accident report filed by Deputy Josh Krause, Jerome M. Hutchison, 33, Rock Hill, S.C., was attempting to exit from the gas station parking lot when he drove his semi tractor-trailer into the path of a station wagon driven by Ryan K. Miller, 22, Indianapolis.

Hutchison told officers he did not see Miller traveling northbound in the driving lane because of another semi in the turning lane preparing to turn into the gas station.

Although both vehicles used proper safety restraints, a passenger in Miller's vehicle was injured during the collision. TransCare personnel transported Bradley M. Courtney, 25, Indianapolis, to St. Vincent Clay Hospital for treatment for minor head injuries.

Officials estimated the total damages for both vehicles at approximately $2,500-$5,000.

Indiana State Police Trooper Sam Stearley cited Hutchison for failure to yield the right of way.
