He was born Nov. 6, 1919, in Clay County, to John and Mary (Stearly) Romas.
He was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ and taught Homebuilders Sunday School class for many years. Gayle dedicated his life to farming and his family.
He is survived by his wife Doris Evelyn Fretz Romas, Brazil; son and daughter-in-law Jon Anthony Romas and wife Kathleen, Itasca, Ill., daughter and son-in-law Julia Michele Romas-Hoffa and husband Gerry, Center Point; grandchildren Lisa Romas Elliott and husband Floyd, Las Cruces, N.M., Jon Dayton Romas and wife Jennifer, St. Louis, Tamara Hoffa Hermesch and husband Tony, Greenwood, Ind., Michael Chad Hoffa and wife Cindy, Brownsburg, Ind., Andrew Kiel Hoffa and fiancÚ Brooke Hanna, Bloomington, Ind., and step-grandson Michael Kilroy, Chicago; great-grandchildren Ignatius Elliott, Benjamin Alexander and Grace Romas, Abigail and William Hermesch, Samual, Michaela and Olivia Hoffa; sister Helen Romas Kumpf; and sisters-in-law Ruth Fretz Stant, New Castle, Ind., Elsie Fretz Dunn, Evans, Ga., and Norma Fretz Rector, Center Point.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Kenneth Romas.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 28, at French Funeral Home, with Rev. Ted Schory officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at French Funeral Home, with a prayer memorial at 6 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ or a charity of the donor's choice.
