MOORESVILLE -- The Northview Knights sent three wrestlers into the championship match, won a pair of thirds and two fourths on the way to placing second as a team at the Mooresville Holiday Classic.

Luke Pingleton was a champion for the Knights, going to overtime before earning a take down against Brownsburg's Chris Oaks to score a 4-2 sudden death victory at 112 pounds.

Meanwhile, both Brandon Hathaway and Brandon Mikesell also advanced to the finals before earning runner-up finishes.

"It was a really good win for (Luke)," said coach Dan Mikesell. "He beat a solid kid in the final. He's been focused and fought through some shoulder pain. I'm really pleased with his effort."

Zach Stultz (left) finished strong on Friday to take third place at 145 pounds.
Hathaway fell behind 7-0 during the early stages of his match against 135-pounder, Chad Welch, of Castle. But he bounced back to get a pair of second period takedowns to get within 10-4, but was caught in the third period by Welch to lose by fall.

"He got caught early, but he battled back," said Mikesell of Hathway's second period run. "I feel bad that he lost because I know how badly he wanted this win and he worked hard. But the (state) finals will probably go through that kid."

Mikesell made the finals with a fall and two decisions, but wasn't able to solve the Castle freshman in a 10-3 defeat.

"Brandon did a nice job putting together a nice tourney," assessed Mikesell. "This is a pretty prestigious tournament to make the finals."

Castle's Knights wrangled six individual titles to take the team trophy with 281.5 points to Northview's 160.5. Homestead was third with 157 points.

Luke Pingleton leaves the mat celebrating a championship at 112 pounds.
Beau Pingleton improved to 18-3 this season by defeating Homestead's Patrick Robinson in the third place match, 23-8.

Mikesell pointed out that despite a semifinal loss to eventual champion Phillip Seitz of Castle (6-4), Pingleton finished in style.

"Beau lost a tough match to (Seitz) in the semifinal, but that really should have been the championship match," said Mikesell of a bout between two competitors with a combined record of 36-5.

Zach Stultz scored another third for the Knights by rebounding from a 1-0 deficit to Joey Juliano of Mooresville. Stultz trailed by a single point into the third period when he tied the match with an escape and took Juliano down late for the victory.

The effort was perhaps even more impressive when Mikesell admitted that Stultz wasn't quite at full strength.

"Zach has been a little sick. Last week he had he bug that's been going around, but he battled through that to make weight. I'm proud of him," commented Mikesell.

Furthering Northview's runner-up finish as a team was a fourth place finish from Kyle McCoy and Caleb Dutrow.

Dutrow came back from a second round loss to win three straight matches, earning valuable team points for Northview. McCoy meanwhile couldn't quite get past Castle's Andrew Seitz, dropping two five-point matches, but he battled to provide key team points.

"McCoy by far had the toughest draw of the tournament," mentioned Mikesell. "He wrestled better than a fourth place finish and he's getting better and better."

At 215 pounds, Jared Staley pounded out a 13-2 major decision over Madison's Shawne Clubb, scoring back points twice in the second period for the victory. The win gave Staley a critical seventh place finish.

"Tom Herr-Smith and Jared Staley did a good job of coming back to get seventh place," said Mikesell. "They both knew how important those team points were."

Herr-Smith scored an 8-7 decision over Beech Groves' Cruz Dyson, earning the winning back points late in the third period for the victory.

Skyler Hall also rebounded from and opening round loss to score an eighth-place finish for the Knights.

Afterwards, Mikesell pointed towards the results from Castle as a goal for his team to achieve in the future.

"I'm pleased with the group of seniors we have," said Mikesell. "We have to get some more champions, but Castle is a great program and we want to be like the Castle's out there," he said referring to the state's storied programs.

The Knights will be back in action on Saturday at the Columbus East Six-Way Tourney.
