SWITZ CITY -- The Clay City Eels won the third place game Saturday night during the 38th-annual Greene County Daily World Invitational over North Central, 62-58.

"Your goal at the beginning of the tournament is always to win the tournament," said Clay City basketball coach Grant McVay. "In eight years that's happened once for us. After the fact, the year before we won it and the year after we won it, we won the third place game.

"It means a lot to win that third place game, especially for the kids in the program. A few years from now people aren't going to look at the score and remember how the game went. It's nice to win that game."

The Eels were led in scoring by Jordan Defore, who finished with 20 points in the victory. Also, Will Kennedy added 19 points and 15 rebounds.

"I thought the kids played hard," complimented McVay. "I thought Jordan Defore came back and had a very good effort."

"We did a nice job, for the most part, of moving the basketball and putting some pressure on them to have to defend the basketball inside. I was very pleased with the way Defore bounced back and played and Kennedy rebounded the ball well tonight,"?said McVay.

The Thunderbirds were led in scoring by Donnie Abrams, who tallied 20 points in the loss. Michael Woodsmall scored 10 points. Abrams and Woodsmall each had seven rebounds.

"We had a lot of defensive breakdowns tonight (Saturday) and last night (Friday)," said North Central coach Ryan Kamman. "Where we are defensively sometimes, we just don't play with urgency. And that showed in the first three quarters tonight."

Clay City led throughout most of the game, as they took the lead, 12-10 and never trailed in the contest. The Eels took a 31-23 lead at the break and extended it to 45-33 after three quarters. But North Central pulled the contest to within one in the fourth quarter, 59-58, on a steal by Bobby Swaby with 63 seconds to play in the game.

However, the Eels got a nice in bound play, which set up Kennedy for an easy lay up to give Clay City a 61-58 lead with 19 seconds.?Braxton Griffith added a free throw with 10 seconds for the final margin of 62-58.?The Eels (8-3) will return to Greene county this Friday when they take on Eastern Greene in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference contest.
