Janet and John Hagemier have been married for five years.

For 16 years, John has been a member of the National Guard.

Like many others, John's National Guard unit -- based out of Terre Haute -- is attached to the 76th Brigade Combat Team, which was recently deployed.

Approximately 3,400 soldiers from the unit were officially called to duty last week and were sent off via ceremony at the RCA Dome on Jan. 2.

John's rank is that of an E-5 Sgt. He is part of Company F, 113th forward support company based in Terre Haute, which is attached to Charlie Company 1 of the 151st Infantry Company 76th Brigade out of Indianapolis.

The unit initially traveled to Ft. Stewart in Georgia for additional training before heading to Kuwait. Following that, the soldiers will head to Iraq.

Via telephone interview, Janet told The Brazil Times John's orders were written for 400 days.

She said although he's attached to the infantry group, he's in maintenance.

"We've known for a while," Janet said regarding the deployment. "We just never talked about it. He just sort of went and did his weekends once a month.

"He's been in the military for I think 16 years, just in the National Guard, but he's never really gone anywhere."

Janet attended the ceremony in Indianapolis on Jan. 2, which included guest appearances by Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, Congressmen Joe Donnelly, Brad Ellsworth, Mark Souder, Mike Pence, Steve Buyer and Dan Burton, Indianapolis Colts' Team President Bill Polian, Col. Courtney Carr, Major Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, Sen. Richard Lugar and Gov. Mitch Daniels.

"That was sort of a strange day," Janet said. "We all had to say goodbye. That was really difficult, especially for our daughter (3-year-old Myriam). She really wanted to say goodbye to him."

While fighting back tears, Janet said she had close to 10 minutes to say goodbye to John in person at the RCA Dome on Jan. 2. She told him that she loved him.

"And just try to keep in contact with us," she said. "It was kind of a rushed type thing. But it's amazing the toll it takes on your family."

Janet said she purchased a military-provided video, which helps families deal with deployment. In addition, she said she's already attended a family readiness group.

She said since he left, she's talked to him a few times but admitted John has a bad cell phone signal.

However, she will be traveling to Georgia soon to see her husband off prior to his being deployed to Kuwait.

She said her husband keeps a picture of her and Myriam with him at all times.

"It's just very hard for the people left behind," she said.

Janet said John also has an 8-year-old son, Dakota, who lives in Georgetown, Ill.
