Seventh-grade Knights earn WIC championship, eighth-grade is runner-up

The North Clay seventh grade basketball team won the WIC?Championship on Saturday afternoon. The Knights include:?Devin Clark, Garrett Baysinger, Alec Coughanowr, Craig Peters, Trent Barnett, Dakota Davis, Dallas King, Braden Parr, Travis Hakman, Jordan Tracy, Drake McKee, Chad Godsey, Skyler Holifield, Larry Shaffer, Dylan Green, Phillip Lalen, Justin Sampson and Bryce Britton. Coaches are Scott Fosdick and Chris Dehart.

The seventh grade boys' basketball team brought home a Western Indiana Conference championship during the weekend, winning three games on Saturday to take the trophy.

The Knights opened the day by taking down Sullivan 40-25, pulling away in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Arrows by 10 points.

Phillip Lalen led the team with a 14-point contest followed by nine points from Bryce Britton and five from Travis Hakman. Dallas King and Braden Parr each added four points.

The win over the Arrows gave the Knights a berth in the semifinals against South Vermillion where they grabbed an early 10-point lead after one quarter on the way to a 43-22 win.

The Knights held South Vermillion to just 10 first half points while building a 27-10 lead and then cruising to the 20-plus point victory.

Parr led the team with 11 points followed by 10 from King and nine from Larry Shaffer with Hakman contributing four.

In the championship game, North Clay held off a late rally by Edgewood to score a 37-36 win over the Colts.

Edgewood came back from a 25-18 deficit heading into the final period.

Craig Peters and King each had nine points in the win and Britton had five points followed by Lalen's four and three each from Shaffer and Hakman.

Eighth grade basketball

North Clay couldn't solve their problems against Sullivan this season, falling once during the regular season and dropping a championship game decision to the Arrows, 44-38.

The loss was one of just three during a 14-3 year.

The Knights opened the tourney by downing Brown County, 45-32 led by 14 points from Chance Talbot and eight apiece from Kodie Girton, Zach Hull and Damon Hyatt. Bryant Pestoff added four with Dillon Reynolds scoring three points.

In the title game, Sullivan got off to a strong start, building a 25-14 lead at halftime and then held off a fourth quarter 12-7 rally by the Knights.

Reynolds rang up 12 points with Talbot contributing 10 and Girton adding eight. Both Hyatt and Hull had four points in the loss.
