Harmony Happenings

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

Everyone is welcome to attend Harmony United Methodist Church on Vine Street any Sunday for services. Pastor Bob's sermon this week will be on "Why We Have Joy." It will be taken from Matthew 5: 1-12.

Dave Shorter will be the Worship Leader. David and Cheryl Brinson will be at the door to greet you. Amy Morgan will be the teacher for Junior Church this Sunday. Join us.

H.U.M. Women met in Fellowship Hall on Monday evening. Members welcomed Eva Latham to her first meeting. A fundraiser is planned for April but members will try to think of some new ideas to raise money for several missions.

A theme was picked for the Mother/Daughter Banquet planned for May. Mother Goose and nursery rhymes will be used to decorate for the evening. Rita Jones gave the lesson. Carolyn Kumpf was the hostess. Check the additional news article on this meeting for more complete information.

Harmony United Methodist has started two new programs. One is the Sunday Contemporary Worship and the other is a fun fellowship night called Christian Cards. All denominations are welcome to come to either event. The first Contemporary Service will be Feb. 10. Fellowship starts at 6:30, and the service will begin at 7 p.m.

The second Christian Cards evening will be on Feb. 8. Christian Cards is a game night. Card games, dominoes, Scrabble, Pictionary, etc are used for good clean fun. Attendees are encouraged to bring refreshments. Kids are welcome but are your responsibility -- no babysitting program is available at this time. It may be possible later.

Eva Kay Trout-Roach and I have been enjoying our birthdays this week. Denny spoiled me with movies and dinner on Sunday and then surprised me with a dozen red roses on Monday. Eva Kay stopped by with flowers, too. Thanks. The brothers and sister-in-laws gathered at Mario's on Tuesday to celebrate Eva Kay's day. Mike and Cindy Hodges and family were at an adjacent table. We harassed them a bit and they tried sending their check to our table. The Hodges' granddaughter, Madison, stole everyone's heart. What a sweetie!

The family is still planning Red Lobster followed by birthday cake and presents this weekend. My sister-in-law and I have had our days cancelled or changed due to inclement weather so many times over the years that we figure the celebration can last all month. Fortunately for us, everyone who loves us agrees. We are spoiled and we love it.

If you haven't seen Mad Money or Bucket List, both are excellent. Mad Money is a humorous look at three families at wit's end financially. They devise a plan to steal old money that is going to be shredded. Of course, they get caught. Take a box of Kleenex to see the Bucket List but it is funny at times, too. Both movies look at things that scare all of us, financial disasters and terminal illness. But they dangle our dreams and fantasies, too. Good flicks. Even if the critics may not give them two thumbs up, we did.

Happy Birthday to Joyce Vinson (4th), Bob Osborn (10th), Debbie Akers (12th), Michael Maurer & Mark Weaver (18th)
