GREENCASTLE -- Quick hands and a suffocating defensive presence helped lift the Northview Knights over the Eagles of South Putnam 76-45 Thursday.

At the onset of the game, South Putnam stayed shot-for-shot with the Knights but Northview's defense forced the Eagles into multiple turnovers they converted into instant points.

A three-pointer from Jered Timm opened the floodgates as Northview went on a 16-0 run in the first quarter.

"We came in here and pressured the ball early and got the lead. When we didn't play at that pace we didn't play as well," Northview head coach Mitch Lancaster said.

The Knights kept the pressure on in the second and limited the Eagles to only nine points while throwing in 18 of their own. Timm added six more to his total while Austin Akers knocked down two treys to extend the Northview lead to 43-18 entering the half. Northview shot an amazing 61 percent from the field in the first half, including 4-of-8 from three-point territory.

The Knights' hot hand cooled in the second half but their lead continued to grow.

They shot 6-of-16 in the third to stay out front. South Putnam started to find its shot and broke into double digits in the third by scoring 13.

Things were much of the same in the final stanza as Northview outscored the Eagles 16-14. The Knights shot the ball exceedingly well on the night but Lancaster wanted to focus of the other side of the ball.

"We've been a good shooting team all year," he said. "What we're trying to work on is defense and try to make up for some of our size disadvantages that we have. Sometimes we do well at it and sometime we still struggle with it. We just try to come here and take care of the game."

Timm led the Knight with 23 points while Akers added 14 and Caleb Whitman scored 13.

Northview will travel to Greencastle for a 7:30 p.m. start Tuesday.
