He was born Sept. 30, 1936, in Terre Haute, as the son of Virgil and Harriett Bryant Bridgewater. He had been employed as a truck driver and had also worked as a brakeman on the railroad. He married Mary Ellen Dubbs Dec. 31, 1955. Before his illness, he enjoyed singing and gardening. He was a member of New Life Fellowship Church, Eagles Lodge and the local Teamsters Union.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Joretta J. Price, one niece, Cynthia A. Shelton and one nephew, Fredrick Jackson.
He is survived by his wife Mary, one daughter, Pamela Sue Hoopingarner and husband Dennis, West Terre Haute, one brother, Keith Elkins and wife Joanne, Terre Haute, one sister, Linda Michael, Terre Haute, two grandsons, Kris Hoopingarner and wife Kelly, Danville, Ind., and Joe Hoopingarner and wife Andrea, West Terre Haute and three great-grandchildren, Mason Kinderman, Kaylee Hoopingarner and Allison Hoopingarner.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Monday, at New Life Fellowship Church, 1851 N. Chamberlain Street, Terre Haute. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, at the church with Pastor Jeff Harpole officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute.
