CCS cancels Friday classes

Friday, February 22, 2008

Ice and dangerous road conditions were the determining factors for another school cancellation Friday.

Frank Misner, Director of Transportation for Clay Community School Corporation, said the decision was made at 5 a.m.

He said the ice was measuring around one-fourth to one-half inch. There was also a mist present that appeared to freeze upon hitting the ground.

Misner said the roads were equally bad. There was no road safer than any other, especially side roads. He said some roads out of Brazil were worse.

"Some side roads were a little worse south, but most roads are equally the same," Misner said.

After school officials determined that the roads were not safe, Misner said they notified the School Superintendent, Dan Schroeder. Misner said the decision was made to cancel.

"It was safer to stay home," he said.

Why was Clay County the very last school corporation to announce closings? It was pretty obvious to every county around us, even Vigo who rarily cancels, that the conditions were not favorable to have school. Kids and parents should not have to wait until the last minute to know if they will have to venture out, or to find day care. I understand that sometimes it cannot be helped, but it was very obvious Thursday evening and a little heads up notice would have been appreciated. In Clay County you just can't assume, so we planned on the kids going to school becuase they did not announce until Friday morning.
