Betty Jean Archer, 85, Brazil, died at 6:45 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at St. Vincent Clay Hospital.
She was born Dec. 20, 1922, in Lafayette, Ind., as the daughter of Herman and Ruth Howell Phillips. She worked at Allisons, Indianapolis, and Mallory's, Greencastle, Windbreaker and Adamson's Laundry, both in Brazil until her retirement. She was a member of VFW Post 1127 and had attended Carbon Baptist Church. She enjoyed Bible study programs and bingo at Jackson Gardens, reading and spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands James Peanut Courtney and Richard Archer, one son, Harold F. Ray, one daughter, Sandy Ray, two brothers John Herman Phillips and Harold Keith Phillips, and one sister, Ethel Stanley.
She is survived by daughter-in-law Delores Ray, Brazil, four grandchildren, Harold and wife Angie, Russell and wife Cheryl, James Ray and partner Richelle and Patty Head and husband Cliff, one sister, Joann Jones and husband Dale, and several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
At her request her body will be cremated and her ashes buried at Calcutta Cemetery. Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Heart Association, 208 South LaSalle St., Suite 900, Chicago, Ill., 60604.
