Maxine D. Byers, 93, Brazil, died at 1:50 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at Clay County Health Center.

Born Nov. 2, 1914, in Brazil, she was the daughter of Jay and Carrie Miller Hudson.

She graduated from Brazil High School with the Class of 1933 and began a career as a bookkeeping clerk at area businesses, including Rumbley's Drug Store, the Brazil Waterworks Office, Sherwin-Williams Paint Company, The Fashion Store and Poison Ivy in Terre Haute.

She married Clifford William Byers, who preceded her in death in 1983.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Brazil, Kiwanis and enjoyed her bridge club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clifford, her sister Irma F. Robison, who died April 18, 2006, and son-in-law Ed Gallagher.

She is survived by one son, Gayle Byers and wife Jane, Carmel, three daughters, Julia Gallagher, Marietta, Ga., Sandra Shanks and husband Howard, Paris, Ill., and Nedra Carlton and husband Jim, Brazil, grandchildren Lee. C. Byers, Susan Sims, Bryan Gallagher, Christopher Gallagher, Greg Shanks, Lisa Shanks, Stacy Wince, Stephen Shanks, Diana Carlton and Jana Johnson, nine great-grandchildren and one cousin, Clara Herbert.

Visitation will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, at Moore Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, with Rev. Tony Alstott officiating. Burial will follow at Clear Run Cemetery, Bridgeton.
