Tip about stolen items online leads to arrest of area woman

A tip from an unidentified person who saw their stolen collectibles on eBay led to the investigation and arrest of a Bowling Green woman Wednesday afternoon.

Although details are limited due to the ongoing investigation, Clay County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Rob Gambill confirmed to The Brazil Times Anita Godfrey, 46, was taken into custody and booked into the Clay County Justice Center on alleged theft charges.

After obtaining a search warrant, Gambill said officers from the CCSD and Brazil City Police Department discovered a large amount of stolen collectible items in Godfrey's residence and in a garage on the property.

Taking a break from processing the vast amount of evidence, Gambill said some of the items were reported stolen as far back as two years ago and others as recent as a few weeks ago.

"There were some very unique, and I'm sure valuable, collectibles discovered among the items," Gambill said. "They weren't stored like a normal collector would take care of something valuable. These things were laying around loose in the house and garage."

Officials are creating a list of the undisclosed items discovered during the search so it will be easier for people to identify and claim their property, which will be made available at a later date.

Gambill has contacted eBay officials about the potential sale of stolen merchandise on the website, but said he has yet to receive a response.

The department is also looking for a person of interest believed to be involved in the incident, according to Gambill, who expects to release more information about the ongoing investigation Thursday.

Not sure I understand how eBay can ensure every item for sell is not stolen.
