Thursday, February 28, 2008

North Clay's Chance Talbot twists his opponent to the mat as he makes quick work in his 240-pound match, winning by fall in 31 seconds.

Times Staff Reporter

Despite falling behind early, the North Clay wrestling team pinned down their eighth win of the season over South Vermillion.

After the first two matches, one by forfeit at the 70-pound class, going South Vermillion's way, North Clay was trailing 9-0 before rattling off a four-match winning streak to take a lead they would not relinquish.

The streak was highlighted by Christian Crews pin of Jeff Kabbany from the Wildcats in 1:34 to take the 105-pound class victory.

South Vermillion mounted a short rally by winning the next two matches at the 125 and 130-pound classes. North Clay's Austin Matherly fought tough but fell by a 6-4 decision at 130 pounds.

However, forfeit wins for Damien Solomon, Larry Shaeffer and Dylan Lofton at the 135, 140 and 145-pound weight classes, respectively, extended the Knights' lead to 42-18.

The Wildcats took the next two matches at 155 and 165 pounds over Baylor and Brady Girton, respectively. Baylor was pinned at 1:37 in his match and Brady was unable to get off the mat, losing by a 10-2 decision.

But the Knights would take the final four matches, three by pin, to extend their record out to 8-1.

Of the three pins, none took longer than 1:07 as North Clay's Chance Talbot dominated his 240-pound match, pinning the Wildcats' Austin Russell in 31 seconds.

In a Monday match versus South Putnam, North Clay posted a 60-42 victory.

North Clay got forfeit wins from Shane Ryan and Nick Coltharp and Garrett Modesett, Bell, Collin Richard, Shaffer, Baylor Girton, Aaron See, Dylan Green and Talbot all won via fall.

The Knights will travel to South Vermillion Saturday to defend its Western Indiana Conference championship before facing Cloverdale on the road March 4, then Owen Valley March 6.

Saturday's matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m.
