He was born Nov. 23, 1941, in Vigo County, the son of William Mattox Sr. and Ruth Stedman Mattox.
He attended Garfield High School prior to entering the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War.
On Sept. 19, 1967, he married Judy Reese Mattox. She survives.
He last worked at Wal-Mart as a floor crewmember.
Bill enjoyed hunting rabbits, squirrels and mushrooms and could make wonderful additions to their home with his woodworking skills. He truly loved the pastime of fishing. He didn't mind fishing from the bank or a boat, he just loved to fish.
He will be missed by his mother, Ruth Mattox, and his wife Judy, both of Brazil, four sisters, Mary Noble and husband Ed, Terre Haute, Naomi Price, West Terre Haute, Connie Cotton and husband Jack, New Mexico, and Carol Lawson and husband Gary, Mississippi, three brothers, John Mattox Sr. and wife Freda, Georgia, David Mattox and Daniel Mattox and wife Emily, Brazil, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, Roger Mattox Sr., and one nephew, Roger Mattox Jr.
Services will take place at 1 p.m., today, at French Funeral Home with speaker Rick Herron. Visitation is today from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Cremation will take place with his ashes buried at a later date.
