Special concert before state finals competition

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

In anticipation of the State Finals, the public is invited to a send off performance by the Northview High School indoor percussion and the winter guard at the school's gymnasium Friday night.

"It's good for the band and guard members to perform in front of an audience before heading off to competition this Saturday," Band Director Bob Medworth said. "That little bit of pressure helps them prepare."

This is the second appearance for the NHS Indoor Percussion at the Indiana Percussion Association State Finals, with the group placing first in Class A competition in 2007. The 22-member percussion group is competing in Open Class this year, which, according to Medworth, has a more difficult level of judging.

NHS Indoor Percussion placed first in their preliminary competition last weekend at Avon High School, Avon, Ind., which allows them to compete this weekend at state finals.

The group is scheduled to perform at 7:25 p.m., Saturday, at Ben Davis High School, Indianapolis.

Since 1985 the NHS Winter Guard has competed in World Class Competition at the Indiana High School Color Guard Association, appearing at state finals 19 times and winning the event twice. This year's guard unit will perform with the top guards in the country during the state finals when they compete at 9:50 p.m., Center Grove High School, Greenwood, Ind.

With both groups performing technically challenging programs this year, Medworth said the dedication of the students, who practice 15-20 hours per week, shows in their programs and it would be great for the community to see the culmination of their efforts.

"There was a time when people could attend a basketball or football game and see the routines," Medworth said. "But with programs becoming so difficult over the past few years, often the students are still learning and tweaking the programs right up to the point of competition. This is a great way for people to see what these (programs) are doing."

The middle doors on the north side of the school building will open at 7 p.m. to allow the public to attend the dress rehearsal performances by the Northview High School Indoor Percussion and Winter Guard in the gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
