The UDWI REMC Community Fund is currently accepting grant applications.
Its board of trustees will meet March 29 to select March recipients.
In 2005, Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC set up the UDWI Community Fund as a means for members to give back to their communities. Three years later, the program has distributed more than $200,000 in the form of grants to community service organizations that make a difference.
The grant funds are collected through a program called Operation Round Up, in which members may donate their spare change to contribute to worthwhile organizations. Operation Round Up rounds up participating members' electric bills to the next whole dollar. The spare change is put into the UDWI Community Fund and every three months, the money is distributed back into communities in the form of grants.
The program amounts to approximately $15,000-$18,000 awarded quarterly.
