"I really care about the kids and the teaching staff … it's the right thing to do," Heffner said.
Heffner has lived in Clay County for 37 years, and has two children going through the Clay City schools. She also spent time substitute teaching 11 years ago.
Heffner, a lab technician at Terre Haute Medical Labs, said she feels she has a responsibility to make the most of the resources available to the corporation.
A Farm Bureau member, Heffner also sits on the Bowling Green Old Settler's committee.
She is a certified lab technician through the American Society of Clinical Pathology, which requires her to complete continuing education classes. Heffner feels through her continual education, she understands the importance of current curriculums.
Heffner said she will bring fortitude and leadership to the school board.
"I'm persistent … When I start something, I'm in it for the long haul," she said.
Heffner is running for the District 1 seat against Michael Maccarone.
