Playing in their season opener, the Northview girls' tennis team put forth a valiant effort, but came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Plainfield.

"I was really proud of the girls tonight," commented volunteer coach Emily Goff of the Knights. "Plainfield always has a good team and we were so close to beating them this year. We had our chance."

A year after dropping a 4-1 road decision to the Quakers, the Knights' number two doubles team gritted out a three-set victory that showed Northview's willingness to battle.

Allison Stearley and Andrea James grabbed an opening 7-5 win in the first set before falling 0-6 to Plainfield's Amanda Heath and Olivia East.

Rather than letting frustrations set in over the loss, Stearley and James stepped forward to score a 6-2 clinching win in the final set.

"Our number two doubles pulled it out in the third set and worked well together," said Goff.

At number one singles, Allie Melega took a straight set victory, 6-3, 6-3 against Becca Brock.

Goff was pleased to see Melega get her season started on the right track.

"Allie Melega played really well tonight (it was her first time playing at No. 1 singles)," said Goff. "She is very athletic and a hard worker."

The number two singles match went to the wire as Northview's Jazmine Kellum battling to a three-set decision against Hannah Knust.

Kellum won a long first set via tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5), but Knust came back to take the final two sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Plainfield also won a three-set victory at number one doubles, as Molly Delaney and Lindsay Fouty won a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 match against Northview's Bonnie Froderman and Hannah Pond.

Ali Rentschler fell at number three singles, 6-0, 6-0.

In junior varsity play, the Knights got singles wins from Olivia Kumpf and Lauren Reberger with the doubles team of Conner Reinoehl and Kaci Khert winning, 9-7.

"We saw a lot we need to work on to get ready for our next match on Wednesday against Linton at home," said Goff.
