Times offering public way to honor military

Sunday, April 13, 2008

While honoring our past and present servicemen and women, local residents can help erect a monument to recognize one of Brazil's military heroes.

A special feature, "A Salute To Our Soldiers," will soon appear in The Brazil Times.

"People can bring in information and a photo of their family member or friend who has served our country in the military," Times General Manager Lynne Llewellyn said.

"For a donation of $3, their serviceman or woman's information and picture will be highlighted in the paper."

Llewellyn said all funds collected would help support the "Charles B. Hall Memorial Foundation."

"It will be a great way for local residents to help raise the donations necessary to complete the project," she said.

Once approximately $15,000 is collected, a monument will be built on the lawn in front of Brazil City Hall in honor of the famous World War II Tuskegee Airman.

Hall was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for being the first black fighter pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft on July 21, 1943. (Hall will be featured in an upcoming story in The Times.)

The Brazil Times will begin publishing the profiles the day after Memorial Day, May 27, 2008. The last day to drop off information will be Nov. 1.

"We hope to have enough to publish one in each newspaper until Veterans Day on Nov. 10," Llewellyn said.

"We will also use the profiles and other history taken from The Times archives in a special section to be published on Veterans Day."

For more information, contact Llewellyn during normal business hours at 446-2216.
