Plainfield -- The Northview Knights are making a bad habit of starting their bats too late in the game and it cost them Monday night at Plainfield High School.

The Northview girls fast-pitch softball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit, had the tying run on second and the go-ahead run at bat in the seventh, but fell short 5-4 to the Quakers in the non-conference game.

Northview takes a 3-2 record into Tuesday's Western Indiana Conference home game against the Sullivan Golden Arrows.

Northview scored four runs on four hits in the final two innings after being shutout and held to two hits in the first five innings.

"When we needed a run in the sixth our girls started getting the hits. If we start sooner we'll put 'the opponent' away sooner,"? Northview coach Bethany Jones said.

Emily Phillips led Northview's six-hit attack with a single and double. Erica Conrad delivered a run-scoring double in the seventh. Traci Sanders, Shelby Colson and Jonna Raderstorf each chipped in with a single.

Plainfield led 1-0 after four innings. Northview could not lay off the riser pitch thrown by Plainfield's Dani Sanders.

"(Sanders) had a good riser and a good change-up,"? Jones said.

Once the Knights quit swinging at those two pitches, they started hitting, but by that time Plainfield was up 4-0.

The Knights cut the gap to 4-3 in the sixth. Phillips led off the sixth with a double. Conrad reached base when Plainfield made an unsuccessful play on Phillips at third, putting Knights on the corners with no outs.

Sanders singled to drive home Phillips. Raderstorf, pinch-hitting, singled to score Conrad. Sanders scored on an infield ground ball by pinch-hitter Katie Smith.

Plainfield scored an insurance run in the sixth on Northview's only error of the game, a high throw at homeplate.

Northview cut the margin to one run again in the seventh. With one out, Thomas was hit by a pitch and moved to second when a pick-off throw got by the first baseman. Thomas advanced to third base on Phillips' ground ball to second base, but that was the second out. Conrad ripped a double to the left field fence, scoring Thomas, and represented the tying run at second base. That is where she stood when Plainfield got an infield ground ball to end the game.

In JV action, Plainfield downed Northview 15-3.

Kaylee Clark led the JV Knights with two hits and scored one run. Ashley Ball and Haley Miller each had one hit and scored one run.
