Landry Moore and Samantha Solomon were the brightest spots for the Northview Knights in the Big 4 Track and Field Meet on Saturday at Northview High School.

Landry paced a one-two finish in the 800-meter run for the Northview boys, while Solomon unleashed one of her best discus throws of the season to win for the Lady Knights.

Terre Haute North easily won both meets, but Northview's girls earned a respectable second place. North's girls scored 105 points, Northview 57, Terre Haute South 43 and West Vigo 39. North's boys won with 103.5 points, followed by South with 74.5, Northview 47 and West Vigo 19.

Coach Ryand Tucker was very pleased with the Lady Knights.

"The girls did well, extremely well (compared) to what they've done in the past and I was pleased with the second place today," Tucker said.

Northview's Solomon threw the discus 109 feet, 9 inches for first place. The sophomore also scored fourth place points in the shot put at 32-feet-1 .

The Knights got strong second place performances from Shandi Travis in the high jump and Kylee Thacker in the 800.

Travis cleared five-feet, tying her season-best height, but couldn't go any higher. North's Beth Liebler cleared a season best 5-feet-2 to win.

Thacker had nothing left at the end of the 800 and had to be helped off the track after taking second in 2:35.21.

Thacker, Casandra Barnett, Shelby Sands and Allie True combined to run the 4x800 relay in 10:50.42 for second place. Barnett later took second in the 1600 with a 5:59.19 run.

Coach Tucker pointed out the season-best performances of freshman pole vaulters Annie Smiley (second place) and Jessie Timberman (third).

Smiley was a busy athlete. In addition to the pole vault, she also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash, ran on Northview's second place 4x100 relay team and took third in the 300-meter low hurdles.

The one-two finish of Moore and John Latta in the 800 was the high point in what coach Jeff Gambill called 'an average meet' for the Northview boys.

"We weren't consistent in all the events, but the score we got is pretty close to what I thought we would get. Terre Haute South really stepped it up. I thought we had a shot at (South), but they had a good meet," Gambill said.

"Our guys did okay. We're a little bit dead-legged, so we're probably going to rest for the conference meet. We've had a lot of meets and it kind of showed today."

Northview's Moore set a fast pace in the 800. Starting like he was running a 400 sprint instead of the 800, Moore challenged the field and himself, and it worked. Moore won the 800 in 2:05.19 seconds.

"I always try to start out really hard in the beginning and then just try to hold on (at the end) with whatever I have left in the last 200.

That's when you really have to push it,"? Moore said.

Latta was only runner in the field to accept Moore's early challenge and finished second in 2:06.38.

"I thought our 4x800 [meter relay] and our 800 (performed well).

Landry ran his best time ever. Joel Whittington, a freshman, got second in the 110 (high hurdles) and 300 (low hurdles). I thought he had a good day,"?Gambill said.

Moore and Latta joined Kolby Henke and Conor Strain to run the 4x800 in 8:34.44, second behind North's winning time of 8:28.23.

Whittington was maybe six inches from winning the high hurdles.

North's Dayne Hosier won in 16.60 seconds and Whittington was second in 16.64. Whittington ran the 300-low hurdles in 42.91 seconds.

Northview's Mitch Havilland put the shot a season-best 43 feet, 10 inches for third place, followed by teammate Jordan Keller at 40-feet-10. Keller took fourth in the discus with a throw of 118-feet-3 .
