Softball Knights blanked in title game by Patriots

Sunday, May 4, 2008

Staff Reports

Terre Haute North upended defending champion Northview 5-0 to become the 2008 champion of the Big Four Tourney at Northview High School on Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots defeated West Vigo 18-1 and Terre Haute South 9-0 on Tuesday to win the tourney for the first time since 2003.

The Knights placed second, going 2-1 with wins over both West Vigo and Terre Haute South.

Against the Patriots, Northview wasn't able to get its bats going, mustering just three hits against North pitcher Bethany Sullivan.

North got all the runs it would need in the second inning when a throwing error allowed freshman Kelsey Coffey to score following her walk and a single from Brittney Isom with two outs.

Carly Butwin then singled both runs home with a base hit to right field to put North ahead 3-0.

Knights' pitcher Katie Smith allowed just one earned run in the game, that one coming on a homerun by Kelly Meggs in the sixth inning.

Meanwhile, Sullivan allowed just single hits by Lindsay Thomas, Emily Phillips and Smith.

Northview scored an 8-1 win over the Braves powered by a home run by Smith in a nine-hit offensive effort.

Traci Sanders had a 3-for-4 game with a double and Smith belted a two-run homerun to give the Knights the cushion they needed.

Kyler Clark also doubled in the game as part of a 2-for-4 day for the Knights who are still missing Erica Conrad, who is recovering from a bout of pneumonia.

Shelby Colson was the winning pitcher in the game.

The Knights (9-7 overall) host Riverton Parke today at 5 p.m.
