Staff Report
ELLETSVILLENorthview's girls' track team wasn't quite able to duplicate last year's feat of winning the Western Indiana Conference championship.
The Knights got three individual wins, but Edgewood's superior depth was enough to push the Mustangs to a conference championship.
Edgewood's success in field events and distance running were the fuel for 146 team points while Northview got wins from Kylee Thacker in the 1,600 meteres, Samantha Solomon in the discus and Sara Niehaus in the long jump gained the team 116 points for second.
Owen Valley's third place finish was paced by 100, 200 and 400 relay wins from Heather Gonser. West Vigo was fourth followed by Sullivan, Brown County and South Vermillion.
Thacker's 5:41 in the 1,600 was good enough for a seven second victory and she was fifth in the 3,200 meters with teammate Allie True scoring a third place.
Solomon ripped off a throw of 105-10 to win the discus event and Niehaus had a leap of 14-7 to edge Haleigh Sanders of West Vigo by one inch.
Sanders also had a great deal of success for the Vikings, winning the 400 as well.
Carlee Bell scored a runner-up finish to Gonser in the 200 meters and took third in the 400 for the Knights.
Annie Smiley was runner-up in the 100 hurldes.
In the high jump, Shandi Travis cleared 4-8 to take third with Hannah Hayes tying for fifth in the event.
Casandra Barnett finished fourth in the 1,600 meters.
The Knights compete next in the sectional on Tuesday evening. Northview's boys compete at home in the WIC meet tonight.
