Flags lowered to half-mast today

INDIANAPOLIS -- Governor Mitch Daniels has directed that flags throughout the state and at the Statehouse be lowered to half-staff today, in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

National Peace Officers Memorial Day is a part of National Police Week, which is a time set aside week to thank law enforcement officers for their service, and May 15 to honor the sacrifice of those who died in the line of duty, to keep communities across the United States safe.

On Oct. 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation, Public Law 87-726, which set aside May 15 as National Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week containing May 15 as National Police Week.

President Bill Clinton signed Public Law 103-322, which directs the flag of the United States on all Government buildings be displayed at half-staff on May 15, National Peace Officers' Memorial Day.
